I first heard of Miss Pamela years ago on a television program all about rock stars and the women who loved them. That's when I learned she had a book, "I'm With the Band." I immediately procured a hardcover copy of the book on ebay and read it just as soon as I could rescue it from its packaging.
A huge music lover myself I knew if I had ever been faced with the question, "Hey Erin, The Police are coming to town tonight, you have to get backstage!" I'd say, "You can't. It's impossible." But here's the thing - it's not impossible because young women make it backstage all the time. Perhaps the passion wasn't burning hot enough when at 15 I stood front and center of the stage with my best friend at a Bryan Adam's concert.
Mr. Big opened for him, and I'm not talking Sex and the City-Chris Noth Mr. Big either. Of course a 40-something-year-old musician just may not have been enticing enough for a couple young teens to take to the backstage. I wouldn't have known what to do with him even if I had found him. But this is all beside the point.
Having been a huge New Kids on the Block fan, and having been hung up on a few other musicians throughout my younger years I couldn't help but wonder what the groupie lifestyle was like.
Clearly growing up in Maine is not conducive to the world of groupiedom. Well Miss Pamela grew up in LA and her strong passion for music paved her way to the life of a groupie. And good for her. Her books are wildly entertaining and a great way to get a sneak peak into what it's like to be loved and adored by the music god she loved and adored.
So - my Internet search revealed that indeed Miss Pamela still lives in Los Angeles. And through her fabulous website www.pameladesbarres.com I found, and promptly signed up for a writing workshop she is holding at her home in Marina del Ray. I also splurged and got tickets to go on a rock and roll tour Miss Pamela is giving of Los Angeles. She will cover some of her old hang outs and celebrity homes. Ryan and I are both excited - me because I am both a rock fan and a groupie fan, and Ryan because he is a rock fan. Who better to give this tour than a woman who has been there, lived it, experienced it all, and canoodled with so many spectacularly talented musicians?
I'll be sure to let you all know about both of these exciting events. I'm sure a blast will be had by all.
